St. John New York boutique hosted an intimate conversation with Kara Medoff Barnett, Executive Director of American Ballet Theater (ABT) and Jill Kaplan, VP & Publisher of Crain’s New York Business during their annual Executive Movers event. Kate discussed her career trajectory from a young dance student to her decade at Lincoln Center to what she loves about the ABT. In her short time running at the ABT she loves being close to artists and being able to support their dreams. “There is a tremendous amount of energy that I gain,” she said about being surrounded by dancers at the top of their game. She also discussed the challenges she has personally faced with juggling career and family but she went on to express – “I will [always] feel those butterflies because no matter how challenging a business problem I’m trying to solve might be I can literally walk ten steps and see why I’m working so hard.”

How does she do it all? That harkens back to some advice she received about being present in the room that she’s in at any given moment. It’s not easy, she says, “but when I do it I feel like I’m a better executive or I’m a better mom or a better wife, just being in the room I’m in, in the conversation I’m in.” In fact, her mantra is “every day when I walk out the door, to be present in the room I’m in.” And she is quite a presence indeed.

“Why not get out there and think about what the now will be like?”
– Kara Medoff Barnett
