A collection of St. John style terminology

FEATURES

Bateau Neckline - A wide, high neckline that follows the curve of the collarbone and ends in points on the shoulder seams.

Bracelet Sleeve - A sleeve on a woman's garment that reaches to just above the wrist.

Cowl Neckline - A style of neckline that features a loose-fitting turnover collar commonly found on sweaters and dresses.

Dolman Sleeve - The dolman sleeve is wider at the top near the armhole and tapers to a tight or narrow wrist.

Keyhole Neckline - A neckline with a slit, circle, or oval cut into or near the front or back of the garment, giving a shape resembling a keyhole exposing a small amount of skin.

Mandarin Collar – A close fitting and upright collar that fits close to the neck which originated from Chinese garments.

Mock Collar – Mock collars create the illusion of having a fold-over collar commonly found on dresses and sweaters.

Raglan Sleeve - A raglan sleeve is a set-in sleeve that starts at the neck of the garment with a slanting seam that extends from the neckline to armhole and gives the garment a relatively undefined look.

Shawl Collar - A rounded turned-down collar that doesn’t have lapel notches and extends down the front of a garment.

Tie-neck Collar – A collar type that usually employs a band of decorative fabric that’s worn around the neck, under the collar and ties in front to either hang or can be tied into a bow.


SILHOUETTES

A-Line – A women’s garment that’s generally fitted on top and flared at the bottom.

Fit and Flare – A flattering silhouette that is fitted through the bodice and then flares out into a fuller skirt.

Peplum - A short flared, gathered, or pleated overskirt or ruffle that’s attached at the waist of a woman's jacket, dress, or blouse to create a hanging frill or flounce.

Sheath – A sheath dress fits close to the body and generally has a defined and figure hugging waist.

Shift - A shift dress is traditionally short with simple lines that lacks detailed shaping and is generally sleeveless.


PANT FITS

Alexa Fit – A cropped skinny pant that sits 1 inch below the waist.

Audrey Fit – A medium rise pant, narrow leg, that’s capri length.

Diana Fit – A high rise pant that sits ¾ of an inch below the waist with a wider flared leg.

Emma Fit – A cropped ankle pant with a medium rise that sits 1 inch below the waist and tapers at the hem.

Jennifer Fit – A slim-leg, low rise pant with a structured, fashion fit waistband falling 2 inch below the waist.

Kasia Fit – A medium rise pant, narrow through thigh, boot cut with an elastic waist band.

Kate Fit – A high rise pant that sits 1 inch above the waist with a flowing leg and elastic back waist band.

Marie 5 pocket – A fitted tapered leg and higher waistband and sits ¼ inch below the waist.
